With NBA draft order now set, the Cleveland Cavaliers may find themselves in a priceless position. The Cavs have multiple young players, a Quality Vet, and various quality role players to where they could start choosing who they would like to build the team around. With so many different NBA teams with disgruntled Star players, this could be the time to capitalize on all the chaos. This year’s (2022) NBA draft could produce multiple long term NBA starters. Various teams have salary issues and are desperately trying to wiggle up some cap cushion to improve their team. Sometimes that could mean giving up more for less for the long term relief and maneuvering space. Whatever the case, the Cavs have a lot to think about. Retaining their 1st round pick in this year’s draft, due to failure to make the playoffs, ending up with the #14 overall along with the #39 & #56. Now the Cavs could stay home, make no trades, resign Colin Sexton and just add more youth and talent to this roster. Or the Cavs could decide that they have enough pieces to start building around and begin making “Win Now” transactions. The question is, who are they building the team around? Now in my opinion, The Cavs need an official Starting Small Forward, a Tall defensive Point Guard who can penetrate and create off the dribble, and a defensive Big Man could can Rebound on both ends & Defend the Rim. I think this all begins with Kevin Love’s trade value! Ultimately Lauri Markkanen can play the role Kevin does but Cavs will lose in rebounding while gaining in height and athleticism. Lauri is a great shooter and almost 10yrs younger so keeping him over love is presumed smart move long term. But who would trade for that $29mil expiring contract? Also I feel like Darius Garland & Jarrett are All-Star 3rd options right now. Where their value lays is in Darius’s ability to Stretch the floor and facilitate, & Jarrett’s ability to defend the paint & Rebound. I think they have ideal skill sets to play the positions they are at. Asking them to do too much right now could hurt their development. Evan Mobley should be used as the number #1 scoring option. His defensive ability is only going to get better as his body mass increases. However on the offense end he could get lost in the scheme is the play style is predicated on making Garland to Allen the #1 scoring method for the offense. Mobley’s offensive potential is what should the focus because it will open up so much for the rest of the team, especially with Evan’s ability to make accurate passes. But once Mobley becomes the #1 scoring option the Cavs will need a #2. And this is where the deciding point becomes either very important or a non issue! Colin Sexton is the Cavs most polished and feared scorers. Though he missed majority of the 21-22 season, his game was sorely missed and was noticeably needed. The Cavs added Caris Levert mid season and, basically, he is a taller version of Sexton. Now Sexton’s contract is up and Levert is on an expiring 1yr deal, so could Cleveland look to upgrade the SG position via trade? They could, but I personally don’t think that’s a wise move. The Cavs have drafted well and, for once, retained their own valuable assets. There are a few Free agent wing players that would probably like the idea of playing with this young blossoming Cavalier core. So that’s why I say it starts with moving on from Kevin’s contract. Once they free that space up, then us fans will really start to see what direction the Cavaliers want to take this team! I do feel like having Issac Okoro, Lamar Stevens, and retaining Dean Wade will help the Cavs with personnel flexibility. These are 3 young players who provide immediate value defensively while all growing offensively. I believe the Cavs should look to add an athletic 3pt & Defensive player to start at Small forward, Ideally 6’8 – 6’10. Garland and Sexton make up the ideal backcourt pair as their games really compliment one another. It will be interesting to see how Colin grows as a passer with more scoring talent surrounding him. Evan & Allen Compliment each other well also as a Front court Paint dynamic. Bringing Levert, Okoro, & Lauri off the bench would give the Cavaliers potentially one of the best on the league. Arguably one of thee most effective & versatile ones as well. So again I say, if they add a 6’5- 6’7 defensive Point Guard who can penetrate and facilitate then add a defensive rebounder who block shots to the Big Man rotation, the Cavs would be totally set for the future! Lamar Steven and Dean Wade could rotate for Issac & Lauri depending on matchups. And Windler will be a nice shooter to have on standby. I think Cedi Osman will probably be traded, unless he adds definitive moves and consistency to his game!
