Robert Jones: From Queens to Coaching Excellence: A Hugh Durham Award Finalist

Norfolk State head coach Robert Jones has once again gained national recognition, being named a finalist for the 2024-25 Hugh Durham Award, which honors the top mid-major coach in Division I college basketball. This recognition is another milestone in a career defined by resilience, leadership, and a deep commitment to success.

Jones’ journey from South Jamaica, Queens, to leading one of the most dominant programs in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is a testament to his dedication and ability to build a winning culture.

Early Life and Basketball Beginnings

Born June 26, 1979, in South Jamaica, Queens, New York, Robert Jones found his passion for basketball at an early age. As a player, he developed a reputation for toughness and skill, ultimately leading him to SUNY New Paltz, where he played at a high level.

During his college career, Jones was a three-time All-SUNYAC selection and finished ninth in school history with 1,321 career points. While his playing days ended after college, his basketball IQ and leadership set the stage for a successful coaching career.

Coaching Beginnings: The Road to Norfolk State

Jones wasted no time transitioning into coaching. He began as an assistant coach at Bard College (2001-2003) before returning to his alma mater, SUNY New Paltz (2003-2004), in the same role.

His first head coaching position came at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset, New York, where he led the varsity boys’ team to a 32-15 record over two seasons. Under his leadership, St. Mary’s advanced to the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic League title game both years, establishing Jones as a rising talent in coaching.

Norfolk State: Climbing the Coaching Ladder

In 2007, Jones joined Norfolk State University (NSU) as an assistant coach. His impact was immediate, as he played a vital role in recruiting, player development, and game strategy.

Jones was on the coaching staff when Norfolk State made history in 2012, upsetting No. 2 seed Missouri in the NCAA Tournament, one of the biggest upsets in tournament history.

In April 2013, Jones was named interim head coach, and by February 2014, he was officially promoted to head coach, taking over a program that he would soon elevate to championship status.

Turning Norfolk State Into a MEAC Powerhouse

Since taking over, Jones has built Norfolk State into one of the premier programs in the MEAC. The Spartans have consistently been one of the top teams in the conference, winning multiple championships and making several postseason appearances.

Key Achievements Under Jones:

MEAC Regular Season Championships (4x): 2019, 2021, 2022, 2024

MEAC Tournament Championships (2x): 2021, 2022

NCAA Tournament Appearances (2x): 2021 (First Four Win vs. Appalachian State), 2022

CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) Champions: 2024 (First nonconference postseason title in school history)

His success has helped raise Norfolk State’s national profile, as the Spartans have developed a reputation for tough defense, disciplined execution, and strong player development.

Awards and Recognition: A Respected Leader

Jones’ leadership and coaching ability have earned him multiple honors throughout his career. His ability to develop players, build winning teams, and maintain consistency has made him one of the most respected mid-major coaches in the country.

Notable Coaching Awards:
🏆 2022 Hugh Durham Award Winner – Recognizing the nation’s top mid-major coach.
🏆 3x MEAC Coach of the Year – 2019, 2022, 2024.

2024-25 Season: Another Shot at the Hugh Durham Award

This season, Norfolk State has once again proven itself as a dominant force, finishing with a 21-10 overall record and an 11-3 mark in MEAC play, earning them the title of MEAC regular season co-champions.

Jones has once again been named a finalist for the Hugh Durham Award, with the winner set to be announced during the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship in San Antonio, Texas.

2024-25 Season Highlights:
✔ MEAC Regular Season Co-Champions (11-3 conference record)
✔ 21-10 Overall Record
✔ Positioned for another strong postseason run

Despite facing roster turnover and strong competition, Jones has continued to build upon his program’s success, proving he is one of the best coaches in mid-major basketball.

The Legacy of Robert Jones

Robert Jones’ basketball journey is a story of perseverance, resilience, and coaching excellence. From growing up in South Jamaica, Queens, to becoming one of the most successful mid-major coaches in the nation, he has left an undeniable impact on Norfolk State and the MEAC.

From professional ownership to college basketball leadership, Master P is making major moves that will leave a lasting impact on the game and the communities it serves.

Master P Named President of Basketball Operations at the University of New Orleans

On February 26, 2025, the University of New Orleans (UNO) announced the appointment of Master P as the President of Basketball Operations for the Privateers men’s basketball team. In this new role, he is tasked with revitalizing the program, bringing his business acumen, basketball knowledge, and community-driven mindset to a team looking to return to prominence.

The UNO Privateers have a storied history in NCAA basketball:

NCAA Division I Tournament Appearances: The team has participated in the NCAA Division I Tournament five times, with a combined record of 1–5. Their most notable victory came in 1987 when they defeated Brigham Young University 83–79 in the first round.

Conference Championships: The Privateers have secured regular-season conference championships eight times and tournament championships four times across different conferences, including the Sun Belt and Southland Conferences.

Transition Between Divisions: Originally competing in NCAA Division II, UNO transitioned to Division I in 1975. The team briefly considered moving to Division III after Hurricane Katrina but ultimately remained in Division I, joining the Southland Conference in 2013.

Head coach Stacy Hollowell expressed excitement about the addition, emphasizing Master P’s deep connection to New Orleans and the value his leadership will bring. For Master P, this is more than just a position it’s a mission to build a program that not only competes on the court but uplifts student-athletes for success beyond basketball.

“This is bigger than basketball this is about building a program that represents family, hard work, and New Orleans pride,” Master P stated during his introduction.

His appointment marks a major shift for the university, as they bring in a leader with both professional basketball experience and a history of successful entrepreneurship.

His love for the game has never faded, and his transition into leadership and ownership roles is a natural extension of his passion.

Beyond the game itself, his influence extends to mentorship, community engagement, and youth empowerment. Whether he’s helping young athletes develop their skills, investing in local basketball programs, or using his platform to inspire the next generation, Master P remains committed to uplifting others through the sport he loves.

The Future of Master P’s Basketball Influence

Angel Reese is one of the brightest stars in women’s basketball, an elite competitor who plays with fire, passion, and confidence. She’s a champion, a leader, and an inspiration to an entire generation. Yet, despite all of this, she remains one of the most unnecessarily hated athletes in sports today. And the truth is, 98% of it has nothing to do with basketball.

The hate didn’t just appear out of nowhere. It started after the 2023 National Championship when Angel Reese made the “You Can’t See Me” celebration toward Caitlin Clark a gesture that had been used in basketball for years. Clark herself had done the same thing multiple times throughout her career, and it was widely celebrated. But when Angel did it? It became a manufactured controversy.

Suddenly, people who had never watched a single women’s basketball game were calling her “classless,” a “thug,” and worse. The attacks weren’t just about basketball they were deeply racial, fueled by the same biases that have existed in sports for decades. The message was clear: confidence from a Black woman is seen as arrogance, while the same behavior from others is seen as competitive spirit.

Trash Talk Has Always Been Part of the Game So Why is Angel Treated Differently?

Trash-talking is as old as the game itself. Larry Bird was one of the greatest trash-talkers of all time. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett the list of NBA legends who talked trash is endless. In the WNBA and college basketball, it’s no different. Players like Diana Taurasi, Sheryl Swoopes, and Sue Bird have all been known to talk their fair share.

But Angel Reese? The second she showed that same competitive edge, people lost their minds.

And that’s how you know the hate isn’t really about the game.

If you watched the sport, you would know that Caitlin Clark herself had no issue with Angel Reese’s celebration. She even defended her, saying that trash talk is just part of basketball. She never played the victim. She never asked for people to attack Angel on her behalf. The racial trolls weren’t defending Caitlin Clark; they were using her name as a weapon to try and tear down Angel Reese.

This is the psychological sickness that exists in sports fandom and society in general. There are people who genuinely cannot handle seeing a confident woman thrive without trying to put her in her place. They hide behind basketball discussions, but their real issue is that Angel Reese refuses to shrink herself to make them comfortable.

The Real Problem: People Believe Anything on the Internet

One of the most damaging things about this entire situation is how misinformation spreads. The average person today doesn’t read full articles. They see a headline, and if it confirms their existing biases, they take it as fact.

There are hundreds of fake pages and accounts dedicated to spreading lies about Angel Reese. They create false narratives, push fake quotes, and twist her words to make her seem like a villain. And because so many people are too lazy to fact-check, they believe it.

This kind of misinformation isn’t just harmful to Angel Reese it’s damaging to the growth of women’s basketball. How can the game grow when every time a player becomes a superstar, they are torn down with false stories and racial attacks?

The Angel Reese They Don’t Want You to See

While people waste their energy hating, Angel Reese is actually making a difference.

She’s a role model for young girls of all backgrounds who see themselves in her confidence, determination, and resilience. She’s proof that you can be bold, unapologetic, and successful without conforming to outdated expectations.

She gives back to her community, running camps and charity events for kids who dream of playing basketball.

She’s growing the game, bringing more attention to women’s basketball than ever before.

She’s an advocate, using her platform to uplift others and speak out against injustice.

These are the things they don’t want you to focus on. Instead, they want you to believe the fake headlines, the out-of-context clips, and the racial narratives designed to tear her down.

The Bottom Line

Angel Reese is a superstar, and no amount of hate will change that. The people who attack her don’t care about basketball. They don’t care about competition. They only care about keeping a confident woman in a box.

But here’s the truth: Angel Reese doesn’t fit in their box, and she never will.
And that’s exactly why she’s winning.

Shakur Stevenson was initially set to clash with Floyd “Kid” Austin Schofield, a formidable opponent in the boxing world. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Schofield had to withdraw at the last minute, setting the stage for an unexpected showdown. Into the ring stepped Josh Padley, ranked #3 in the UK and #32 globally, and a full-time electrician. Despite Padley’s dual commitments and a spotless record with no prior knockouts, social media critics quickly derided the matchup, mocking Stevenson for fighting “just an electrician.

However, Stevenson silenced the skeptics with a masterful performance. He controlled the ring, evaded punches with finesse, and decisively handed Padley his first knockout loss, boosting his own record to 23-0 with 11 knockouts. Despite this, critics continue to question Stevenson’s power, overlooking how he routinely makes even the most seasoned fighters look hesitant and amateurish. They seem barely able to touch him, let alone challenge him.

This fight wasn’t just about physical strength; Stevenson demonstrated a psychological dominance that left Padley and the critics alike bewildered. His approach isn’t about flashy knockouts; it’s about precision, timing, and tactical supremacy. Fighters step into the ring against him, confident, only to find themselves completely outclassed.

In boxing, true power isn’t just about delivering blows; it’s about strategic, psychological, and tactical warfare. Shakur Stevenson embodies this nuanced definition of power, convincing his opponents they never stood a chance from the start.

Maybe it’s time to redefine what power truly means in the sport of boxing.

With the Cavaliers organization committing to the core of Evan, Mitchell, Garland, & Allen long-term, imo, it would serve the best to develop and groom the supporting players for those necessary roles. I think PBO Koby Altman has done a pretty good job so far utilizing the G-League over the last few seasons to give the latest acquisition of draft picks & un-drafted players valuable playing time. The Altman Group, alongside the fore-mentioned, also have a few young players that have specialized skill sets that could possibly fit really well with the core 4 as well. This is extremely important because the contracts of the Core 4 stair step. So they only have to worry about each player’s future, potentially, one offseason at a time. That’s good strategizing from my assessment. Now without having to be overly concerned about those foundational-Stars contracts for the next 4 seasons, that’s leave the front office the luxury of utilizing the remaining cap space, potential cap space, and various accumulated contract leadway’s to really find the best player fits possible. Right now, I believe Cleveland needs a starting Point forward who can provide quality team defense and a Big Man that can rebound at a high level & hit open jump-shots. But in the immediate implementation of HC Kenny Atkinson’s new offensive strategy, I believe that the goal is the have 6-8 players that he can rotate in between his stagger line-ups of DG at pg, Evan at Center, or Spida at lead Guard, Allen at Center and vice versa. Right now Kenny has Levert, Struss, Okoro, Merril, Niang, Wade, & Jerome. In waiting Atkinson has Porter jr, Tyson, Bates, Travers, Nance, Burns,

So the Cleveland Cavaliers end the 23-24 NBA season on a 4-1 playoff series loss to the, eventual League Champion, Boston Celtics. Prior the actual NBA offseason kicking off, Cavaliers PBO Koby Altman made it very clear that he was building his ideal championship contending roster around Guards Donavan “Spida” Mitchell, Darius Garland, along with Big Men Evan Mobley & Jarrett Allen. Altman followed that up with releasing JB Bickerstaff from the Head Coaching position and hiring Kenny Atkinson as his replacement. Ultimately this current version of the Cavaliers were not developing fast enough offensively for Mr. Altman’s liking. He also stated that in hiring the replacement for JB, the core 4 had to be of top priority for any new hire. So there should be no shock on this present day that all four core players are now locked into contract’s with Cleveland for the next 4 years. The new head coach has a 4 year deal. So ultimately Atkinson, Mitchell, Mobley, Garland, & Allen have 4 seasons to at least make it to an NBA title! Is that realistically achievable? If you’re asking me, absolutely. Why am I so convinced? The Altman group, up to this point, has been under a 7 year Culture renovation where John Blair Bickerstaff reshaped the entire priority of Cavaliers basketball. This team has been one of the top tier defensive units for the last 3-4 seasons. Playing with and for one another. Complete selflessness. But offensively they were bottom tier, and JB didn’t really improve in that area over his 7 year tenure as Cleveland’s HC. Kenny Atkinson is considered “one of the best player development & offensive minds in the coaching pool”. Kenny is labeled to be responsible for the growth of players Levert and Allen. Also the Cavs have young players on the roster that can potentially be great compliments to the core 4! Guard Craig Porter Jr, Wing Issac Okoro, Wing Emoni Bates, Wing Jaylon Tyson, Forward Luke Travers, Center Pete Nance, and Forward DJ Burns. Right now they have veterans like G Caris Levert, Wing Matt Struss, along with Forwards Dean Wade & George Niang. With Wade, Niang, & Levert all on the final years of their respective guaranteed deals, these young men have a good chance to earn long term roles with this current Cavs’ roster.

As the WNBA regular season kicks off today, fresh talent is making its debut in the league. No. 1 draft pick Caitlin Clark is acclimating to her new team, the Indiana Fever, sparking excitement for a franchise eager to secure its first playoff spot since 2016.

Kamilla Cardoso, fresh from an NCAA title with the South Carolina Gamecocks, and Angel Reese, part of the LSU Tigers’ 2023 national championship team, are rookies to watch with the Chicago Sky. Meanwhile, seasoned players like A’ja Wilson, aiming for a third consecutive WNBA title with the Las Vegas Aces, and Breanna Stewart, striving to lead the New York Liberty to their first championship, are expected to be strong MVP contenders.

The league also welcomes new coaches: Teresa Weatherspoon with the Sky and Nate Tibbetts with the Phoenix Mercury.

Atlanta Dream
The Dream’s veteran center Tina Charles, returning to the WNBA after a season away, is poised to make a significant impact. Coach Tanisha Wright and GM Dan Padover are confident in Charles’s elite abilities. Charles, a seasoned player with an average of 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, is expected to enhance Atlanta’s already strong rebounding and defensive metrics. Her experience will be invaluable for the team’s young stars, Rhyne Howard and Haley Jones, as they aim to build on last season’s playoff appearance.

Chicago Sky
New coach Teresa Weatherspoon will work to maximize the potential of guards Diamond DeShields and Chennedy Carter. DeShields, a key player in the Sky’s 2021 championship win, returns after injury setbacks, while Carter seeks to revitalize her career after limited playtime due to injuries and disciplinary issues. High-profile draft picks Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese are also in the spotlight, but the performance of DeShields and Carter will be equally crucial.

Connecticut Sun
Coach Stephanie White anticipates Brionna Jones’s return from an Achilles injury for the team’s May 14 season opener. The Sun, who managed well without Jones in 2023, will benefit from her All-Star presence. The revamped guard rotation, featuring Moriah Jefferson, Tiffany Mitchell, and Rachel Banham, aims to bolster the Sun’s chances of securing their first franchise title, especially with key players approaching free agency.

Dallas Wings
The Wings will need to adjust as forward Satou Sabally recovers from a shoulder injury. While Sabally, last season’s most improved player, is out, the team will rely on stars like Arike Ogunbowale and Natasha Howard. The Wings also have an opportunity to integrate draft picks Stephanie Soares and Lou Lopez Senechal, who missed last season due to injuries.

Indiana Fever
Top draft pick Caitlin Clark is expected to boost the Fever’s scoring. Clark, who had a stellar college career, will now have accomplished teammates, including 2023 Rookie of the Year Aliyah Boston, to assist her. The Fever’s three-point game should improve with Clark’s presence, providing a much-needed offensive lift.

Las Vegas Aces
The Aces, defending champions, seek to strengthen their bench, which had limited contributions last season. Newcomers Bria Hartley and Megan Gustafson will aim to provide depth and support for a team led by multiple All-Stars.

Los Angeles Sparks
The Sparks, focusing on their long-term future, will rely on rookies Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson, especially with veteran injuries. Despite the loss of Nneka Ogwumike, the team retains veteran talent and will depend on their young players to make an immediate impact.

Minnesota Lynx
Coach Cheryl Reeve emphasizes defense for the Lynx, who have struggled defensively in recent seasons. The addition of Alanna Smith, a strong shot-blocker, should enhance their defensive capabilities.

New York Liberty
The Liberty have focused on improving their perimeter defense, a weakness exposed in the 2023 Finals. With a solid core and new bench additions, the team hopes to build on last season’s chemistry and experience to secure their first championship.

Phoenix Mercury
The Mercury aim to become serious contenders with significant offseason acquisitions. Integrating new talent with established stars like Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner will be key. Coach Nate Tibbetts will look to establish a stable and cohesive team culture after recent tumultuous seasons.

Seattle Storm
The Storm have added star players Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith. Coach Noelle Quinn will need to integrate these new additions with the existing talent to maintain the team’s competitive edge.

Washington Mystics
With the departure of key players, the Mystics enter a new era focused on rebuilding. Coach Eric Thibault is looking for new leaders to emerge, particularly Ariel Atkins and Brittney Sykes. The team aims to use this season as a foundation for future success, bolstered by upcoming draft picks.

As the season begins, fans can look forward to a mix of seasoned veterans and promising rookies, all eager to make their mark in the WNBA.

Candace Parker, a luminary in the world of women’s basketball, has announced her retirement, bringing a storied career that profoundly impacted the WNBA and the sport as a whole to a close. Renowned for her comprehensive skill set and intelligence on the court, Parker’s journey from a young phenom to a professional powerhouse has been nothing short of legendary.

Parker’s rise began at Naperville Central High School in Illinois, where she was twice named the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She led her team to Class AA state titles in 2003 and 2004, and made history by becoming the first woman to win the slam dunk contest at the McDonald’s All-American Game. This showcased the athleticism and skill that would define her career.

Continuing her dominance at the University of Tennessee under legendary coach Pat Summitt, Parker propelled the Lady Vols to two consecutive NCAA championships in 2007 and 2008. In her freshman year, she broke new ground as the first woman to dunk in an NCAA tournament game and the first to dunk twice in a college game. Her collegiate accolades include two John R. Wooden Awards, emblematic of the nation’s best female college basketball player.

Drafted first overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2008, Parker’s professional debut was as dazzling as her earlier play, earning her both the WNBA MVP and Rookie of the Year awards in her inaugural season—a historic double never before achieved. Throughout her illustrious career, Parker not only amassed three WNBA championships and earned WNBA Finals MVP, but also received two WNBA MVP Awards, a Defensive Player of the Year award, made seven All-WNBA First Team appearances, and led the league in rebounds three times as well as being a three-time WNBA peak performer.

Beyond her tangible successes, Parker has been a vocal advocate for equality and women’s rights, using her platform to inspire and promote change. Off the court, she has been a beacon for young athletes, especially girls who dream of following in her footsteps, contributing significantly to the growth and visibility of women’s basketball.

As Candace Parker steps away from professional play, she leaves behind a legacy defined by her passion, resilience, and unwavering desire to excel. Her retirement marks the end of an era, but her influence will resonate with generations of players who aspire to her heights of excellence. Thank you, Candace, for the memories, the inspiration, and your indelible impact on basketball and beyond.

Once upon a time, on the shimmering shores of Lake Erie, the Cleveland Rockers took the WNBA stage, capturing hearts with their debut in the summer of 1997. As one of the original eight franchises, the Rockers not only embodied the spirit of a pioneering era for women’s professional basketball but also brought a unique vibrancy and competitive edge to the sport.
For six passionate seasons, the Gund Arena was alive with the electric energy of fans who wore their Black, blue, silver, and orange with pride.

Michelle Edwards WNBA CARD

Players like Merlakia Jones, whose relentless drive and scoring prowess earned her a spot in the All-Star team, became local heroes. Alongside her, Michelle Edwards dazzled with her sharpshooting abilities, while Suzie McConnell Serio, an Olympic gold medalist, directed plays with unparalleled vision and leadership as the team’s point guard.
The Rockers reached the playoffs multiple times, showcasing a level of tenacity and heart that resonated deeply with their fans. In 1998, they made a remarkable playoff run, thanks to the stalwart defense of Isabelle Fijalkowski and the scoring support from Chasity Melvin, whose rookie season was marked by standout performances.
The Rockers weren’t just a team;
they were a symbol of progress and opportunity in women’s basketball. demonstrating the strength and talent of women athletes, inspiring young girls to lace up their shoes and hit the courts.
However, in 2003, the lights dimmed on the Rockers as the team folded, leaving a void in Cleveland’s sports tapestry. Today, as the WNBA has grown in popularity and influence, the absence of the Cleveland Rockers is more pronounced than ever. The league has seen expansion and increased support, proving that the appetite for women’s professional basketball remains strong. The return of the Cleveland Rockers would not only fulfill a nostalgic desire but would reignite the spirit of women’s sports in Northeast Ohio.

Imagine the resurgence of the Rockers in a new era, where they could stand as a testament to the enduring legacy and ongoing growth of the WNBA. A reborn Rockers could offer young athletes in Ohio a local pinnacle to aspire to, further enriching the community and ensuring the WNBA’s presence in every corner of the country.

Bringing back the Cleveland Rockers would be more than just a revival of a team; it would be a restoration of a chapter in sports history, a rekindling of old passions, and a beacon of new possibilities. It’s time to #BringBackOurClevelandRockers and light up the Gund Arena once again with cheers, hopes, and dreams. Let’s not just reminisce about the past let’s build the future. The time is now to bring the Rockers back to the court, back to Cleveland, and back into the hearts of fans old and new.

The hype seems to follow the young man everywhere he goes. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, in my opinion. I would guess he is probably growing a little tired of it at this point in his life. The man did say he will enjoy not being in the prime spotlight. And I think he should. I understand the hype too though. A 6-foot-9 Forward with a NBA ready jump-shot and the potential to have unlimited range. Athletic enough to play above the rim. A ball handle good enough to consistently get separation for a nice look at the rim. I believe his basketball IQ is a lot better than given credit for. Overall I’m like, “Mr Bates can ball”! Now he will need to bulk up more. I heard him say in a summer league interview that he was looking to get to about 195lbs. That’s a good goal. He is about 180lbs right now give or take. He saying that just furthers my point above him being more aware that advertised. He is very shot hungry. That could stem from always being the best player on his team. Now in Cleveland, he has a handful of talented players already ahead of him. He just has to fit in. A year in the G league will probably do him wonders. But there is a good chance that once he puts in the work, Bates could luck up on some NBA playing time before the season is over. At some point that 2-way contract has to become guaranteed. There is no rush for him to play. Honestly it is in the best interest of the Cavs to allow him to develop for a couple years. So if Spida leaves after his contract is up with Cleveland a core of Garland, Mobley, Okoro, & Bates would be a good fall back plan for this Altman Group moving forward. I think Mr Emoni Bates has a chance. A really really good chance of becoming a high level starter in the NBA. Only time will tell. Chance are statistically low for 2nd round draft picks. But I mean Jokic was a late 2nd rd pick and he is a 2 time MVP and NBA champion. Possibilities are endless. Question is, when will he put is all together?

LOS ANGELES (IDSS) According to police, a shooting was reported around 11:45 p.m. Saturday near 74th Street and Western Avenue. When officers arrived, they found 16-year-old high school basketball star Quincy Reese Jr. gunned down. He was shot and killed in South Los Angeles over the weekend and the community is now rallying behind his family as the search for his killer begins.

His family said he’d gone to a party with his teammates Saturday when trouble suddenly broke out.

“They attacked him and they chased him down like a dog and shot him in the head,” said Quincy’s cousin, Eric Johnson. Come forward, you guys know who did it, you know what happened … open your mouth, open your mouth,” said Johnson.

The teen’s father, Quincy Reese Sr., said his son was an honor roll student and was planning on taking over as captain of the basketball team with plans to play in college.

“God allowed me 16 years (with him), and I’m thankful for that,” his father said

While no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, the teen’s father had this to say to those responsible for his son’s death.

“You took someone that was a part of a big community, very big community. You stopped some dreams that were supposed to flourish,” he said.

Many young athletes start playing their sport of choice at a young age, with years of experience and training by the time they reach high school. However, for some, a passion for a sport is discovered later in life, with little to no prior experience. This is the case for one high school baseball player,

Asani Wells, who started playing baseball during his freshman year at John Hay High School in Cleveland, Ohio He is also in early college at Cuyahoga Community College for business management.

Asani didn’t start playing sports until his freshman year. Despite the challenges of catching up with his peers and the doubts of others, Asani’s determination and hard work paid off, leading to a successful start to his high school baseball career.

Wells, now a junior at John Hay high  school, is currently ranked  #3 in Ohio in stolen bases and #108th in the nation in stolen bases for the 2023 baseball season,

Q&A with Asani Wells

Q: Why did you wait until you were in high school to start playing sports?

A: I waited until High School to play baseball because growing up there weren’t any baseball teams around my neighborhood.

Q: why did you choose baseball?

A: I chose to play Baseball because my freshman year was during Covid and I wanted to get out the house. It was either baseball or Track and I chose baseball.

0Q: What do you enjoy most about playing the sport?

A: I enjoy seeing the progress that I’ve made from where I’ve first started up until now.

Q: What do you like about playing in the shortstop?

A: I like that there are a lot of ground balls hit to me. Which makes me move around a lot.

Q: How do you prepare mentally and physically going into a game?

A: I listen to a lot music to get myself mentally ready. For me to get physically ready I stretch a lot because playing shortstop requires a lot of movement and I can’t move around without stretching.

Q: What has been your favorite memory of your baseball career so far?

A: My favorite memory in my baseball career was getting my first ever base hit.

Q: What are a couple things you are looking forward to in the rest of this season and What are your goals next season?

A. This season my goal is to try to hit my first home run and play my best. My goals for next year is to have a winning season and to also play at The Progressive Field in the Senate Championship.

Q: What else do you enjoy outside of baseball?

A: If im not playing baseball I enjoy studying it. I like watching Youth Prospects,  College games and MLB games. When I’m not doing anything baseball related, I like to play video games and watch T.V.

Breaking News ,Live Results & Updates

Caris Levert, to me, has showed the ability & potential to become a Perennial 6th Man Of The Year candidate on a title contending team! I believe he’s most lethal as the lead scoring Guard off the bench. Caris, Donovan, & Garland as a 3-headed Guard rotation would grow to be very problematic for opposing teams over the next few seasons. So locking Mr. Levert (3yrs $50mil) in for another few seasons would be a very good move. Most likely, this is very high on Mr. Altman’s off-season priority list. But he has to acquire Caris some reliable running mates. Guys that JB can trust and that also compliment Levert. Last year’s acquisitions of Robin Lopez, Raul Neto, & Sam Merrill wasn’t much help for Coach JB Bickerstaff when it mattered most. Rubio hasn’t recovered well enough since returning from his leg injury to really be that impactful for the Cavs & it is probably in the best interest of both parties to move apart. Cedi Osman hasn’t been a consistent impact scorer to warrant keeping long-term. Take into account Rubio ($6mil) & Osman ($7mil) are on expiring contracts. The Cavaliers don’t have much draft capital available for trade, but Cavs President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman has been very Savvy in trade maneuvers over his current Cavs tenure and I think he could use a future 2nd round pick along with the 2 previous named players to work a sign and trade with the, seemingly in a state of flux, Dallas Mavericks to acquire, the maybe disgruntled, C Christain Wood (3yrs $40il). Wood would be a great compliment to Mobley & Allen, while being a potential great running mate with Caris leading that Cavalier 2nd unit, & reliable defensive Big Coach JB could trust. Christian is an unrestricted free agent. The Cavs could offer him the MLE outright. But they could offer him more money by going through the sign & trade process. Dallas is kind of the NBA’s International Players University, so I think Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban might be open to moving on from the barely used Big Man. I feel like Dallas is about to rebuild around SuperStar Luka Doncic and that could very much include a Kyrie Irving resigning. Those factors could make Wood the odd man out and 2 expiring contracts plus a draft pick could be enough to get Christian to Cleveland. Accomplishing resigning Caris and acquiring Christian via trade would still leave the Cavs with MLE to use for more Signings. One under the radar name that could become a free agent is Malik Beasley. His is only 26, and was acquired by the Lakers in a mid season trade with Utah. He doesn’t seem to be a good fit for the Lakers right now and it is possible they make look to lock up Austin Reeves & Lonnie Walker IV long-term. Plus the Lakers may resign D’Angelo Russell. Beasley expiring deal paid him $15mil this past season, but I highly doubt he will command that much money this offseason. Especially with the new CBA cracking down NBA owners ability to manipulate the luxury tax. A partial MLE deal of 3yrs $25 million could be one of the better deals Malik Beasley would get offered this summer. A 3point shooter and Defender standing around 6’5 from the wingman position (SG/SF). His last few stints (being Minnesota, Utah, & Los Angeles) have seen he become un, or under-utilized to not played at all. A fresh start in Cleveland, with a chance to get significant playing time, on playoff caliber team might be enough to encourage him to leave the 213 for the 216. Pairing Beasley, Caris, & Wood would undoubtedly give this Cavs Bench a promising bench for a few years. Players like Lamar Stevens & Dean Wade would most likely thrive playing alongside those 3 talents. Also leaving a little over $4 left in MLE money to acquire another player. Best guess would that money would be allocated towards a 3pt Shooter. The Cavs still have the bird rights to Bigs Mamadi Diakite & Isaiah Mobley, plus both Wings of Danny Green & Dylan Windler. Diakite & Mobley could Develop through progressive playing time as emergency or relief Paint players. Both have shown the ability to protect the rim and stretch the floor via jump-shot. Rebounding would be their biggest issue. Windler & Green would just have to stay healthy. Both have the size and talents to be 3&D wing players. Green is proven, of course. But Windler has to prove it! All 4 players will most likely be needed to help fill out the roster while being cap friendly and providing the needed skill sets. The potentially remaining $4mil in MLE Money could be used to pursue Seth Curry Tell me what you think?

Guardians send Oscar Gonzalez to AAA

InDaStreetzSportz

Guardians Outfielder Oscar Gonzalez, one of many Cleveland Guardians off to a slow start, was sent to AAA Columbus Saturday. Gonzalez is hitting .192 this season just one homer and 5 RBI in 25 games.

It’s almost like a reset for Oscar,” said Francona. “He doesn’t have to look up at the scoreboard (and see his batting average). Hopefully, that will help. The other thing is we need to get Arias some at-bats. “He’s too important to our future. He hasn’t swung the bat great, but we’ve got to find a way to get him some at-bats. We’ll work him into the mix in right field, as well as when he plays the infield, just to get him some more at-bats.”
